For as long as I've know that there _was_ a Coast Guard, its peacetime
mission has always been "primarily nautical police activities"; it's only
during times of 'hot' wars that it is seconded to the USN and its missions
take on a more military character.

As near as I can tell, their wartime mission is more-or-less the same as
their peacetime mission, _plus_ security of the national waters of the
United States, both coastal and inland, operations and security of ports
for the USN (not clear whether that's only for US ports, or includes
overseas), logistical support for the USN, and I suspect some strictly
military missions where the largest vessel involved would be classed as a
'frigate' (the USCG does not, to my knowledge, have any large ships).
