CT LBB 5 is very clear that energy weapons are included in beam weapons.

MT Referee's Manual I agree is not as clear as in CT LBB 5, however does include the term "beam" which is also used in describing lasers. Without looking the material up again I do not recall any of the other weapons in the Combat section of the MT Referee's Manual using the term "beam".
