Request for GT tanker design Alex Goodwin 15 Nov 2014 08:41 UTC

(OOC: Apologies if I've stuffed things up - thank FreeTrav yet again for suggesting I post.. I'm asking for classic-era GT designs, so that's GURPS 3rd ed. This version might be a tad more readable. )

WOMBAT LIC is seeking designs from interested parties for a tanker fleet to supply fuel to a deep space station 2 pc out (designed, built and maintained by our sister corporation, WOFTAM LIC) from the nearest system, where said fleet will be based.

Tanker physical specifications:
- Unrefuelled out and back capacity at J2

- One full jump's fuel carried in internal tankage

- Second jump's fuel stored at designer's discretion - for example. may be additional internal tankage, drop tanks, cheeseburgers, etc

- Minimum boost of 0.7G when fully laden

- Constructed and supported at GTL10 - higher GTL components are not necessarily verboten, but their elevated costs (1.5x for GTL11, 3x for GTL12) must be clearly accounted for. GTL13 components (at 6x sticker) are not expected to offer sufficient performance advantage to justify their hassle and expense - designs containing such will require an exceptional case to support them

- Frame and materials are at designer's discretion, subject to being able to obtain insurance coverage

- Minimum DR 200 expensive metal armour

- Displacement to be at least one of 5, 10, 20 or 40 kdton - submissions covering multiple tonnages are encouraged

- If fuel is to be refined aboard, sufficient refining capacity to refine all fuel initially onloaded in 150 hours or less

- Crew double-bunk (except if there is an odd stateroom, then the skipper single-bunks), and crew requirements are per TAS requirements (out of game, per GT: Starships, "Crews on Large Ships" pp25-26)

Tanker operational assumptions:
- 23 round trips (out + back) per annum, corresponding to approximately ~90% lifetime availability. Return trips will be unavoidably empty.

- Physical service life of 100 years, with keel-up rebuild at 50 years in service, and disposal for essentially zero scrap value at 100 years. 1.05x capital cost amortised over 100 years at 5% pa - corresponds to annual "mortgage" payment of 5.30% of upfront capital cost. (100% of sticker price up front to build tanker, and 50% of sticker price after 50 years to pay for rebuild)

- 3% of tanker's maximum displacement (2% for annual maintenance, 1% for (re)build) at MCr0.3/dton (starshipyard capacity) to be carried and amortised at 5.05% of that upfront cost per annum (no need to give the starshipyard a keel-up rebuild).

- Due to the overwhelming and unrelenting excitement of crewing a tanker shuttling along a fixed route, each crew position will be paid at KCr2/month and rotated between each of two crews, for a yearly cost of KCr48 per crew position aboard. Each such crew will work on a "one trip up, one trip down" basis and may not necessarily crew the same tanker on successive trips.

- Onloaded fuel is charged at Cr50/dton (for unrefined fuel refined aboard) or Cr350/dton (for refined fuel), whether burned by tanker or delivered to deep space. Other raw materials will have to be priced on case by case basis.

- Berthing fees are NOT payable

- Annual maintenance of 0.1% of vessel's upfront capital cost must still be paid.

Fleet-level requirements and assumptions:
- Must deliver 41.6 Mdton refined fuel per annum to deep space

- Ceteris paribus, designs delivering that requirement at a lower delivered cost per dton will be favoured

- Tanker fleet will be built in-house at WOMBAT's starshipyard
