This has been my experience as well.
It's sad, really. All of the (few) female gamers
I've been in groups with - both as a player and as GM -
have been excellent roleplayers and quite skilled at RL
 group dynamics, as well.

Cynthia Higginbotham ran a Trav PBEM game for a few years & she was really, really good at it.
I could NOT distinguish the NPC's from the PC's at all.
Sadly it came to an end when TNE came out.
Not sure if there was a connection or just coincidence.

.
But then our GM of that time started hitting on her and she
 promptly vanished.
 I
suppose it's sort of like interoffice romances, except
without an HR Department on call to (hopefully) keep things
 in line.

Way back when a female playtester (perhaps the ONLY female playtester?) whose husband worked for SPI (when they published S&T mag) wrote an article in the magazine wrt women playing wargames.
There was a special section concerning 'when the opponent is more interested in playing you than in playing the game'.
