I once (many moons ago now) wrote  PERL script to do that on acouple of different digestformats... it was highly sensitive to the format of the digesying, but could be(slightly customised by appropriate settings of parameters.

You can judge how successful it was by the fact that I abandoned it :(

But if you want to fiddle with it, it's yours. Mail me off-list and I'll try to find it...
