As for the plant, could it be something that used to be more common but land development/use destroyed most (all?) of its habitat and the sole remaining examples are kept by what would be the local equivalent of Earth First! They may not be violent eco-terrorists, but they have a deep reverence for the plant and what it can do, almost to a mystical/religious level, and while they may allow a leaf or stem to be sent away for research purposes, they maintain a very close control and stewardship of the greenhouses where the survivors are kept. I'm not a green (I drive a Lotus and am planning on adding a Jag XKR...so no green here ;-) ), but I think given the reasoned and educated exploration of sex workers, that perhaps adding or touching on an environmental issue with a bit of activism that surrounds it (specific to the scenario and not making judgments on real world events) might be a viable option.
