It's pretty clear that you and your group aren't Hawai'ian - the (in)famous
meat product is _quite_ popular there... If they don't have the highest
per-capita consumption thereof in the world, they certainly do in the US.

A few years back, when I was working 'the field' in Manhattan (I do remote
support, now, instead of on-site), there was a Hawai'ian BBQ place around
the corner from my 'base'. One of the items on their menu was SPAM(r)
musubi.  Think nigiri sushi (the piece of fish on top of the little ball of
rice), only grilled SPAM instead of raw fish, and the rice ball is big
enough to support an entire slice of SPAM. Serve with Hawai'ian potato
salad, which _looks_ like the familiar stuff, but has a wasabi-strong
horseradish mixed in.

I was very sorry when the place closed up after less than a year at the
location...
